District Improvements

The district has a very diverse landscape. Through our projects, we seek to achieve a level of balance and compatibility between the existing neighborhood and the area’s new development. HYHK is dedicated to the beautification and maintenance of the district, and we are adapting constantly to ensure the neighborhood’s changing needs are met.

Streetscape and Beautification

HYHK provides for the planting, watering, pruning, and mulching in Bella Abzug Park, and throughout the district, totaling 124 planters. Planters are adorned with Smokebush, Knockout Rose, Goldeflame Spirea, Yucca, and Lantana to name a few. HYHK also beautifies and maintains 19 tree beds.

Each year, the Canoe, a public plaza maintained by HYHK, becomes a better public space for users of 9th Avenue. Currently, there are 18 tables, 42 chairs, and nine umbrellas available for public use. In the fall of 2018, a large planting bed was installed in the northern section of the Canoe, doubling the amount of green space. 12 new trees were planted, as well as understory plantings. Space was set aside for a permanent public art piece, the Ascension sculpture by local artist, Jordan Baker-Caldwell. The Canoe is open to the public 8:00 am - 7:00 pm, seven days a week. We also maintain the Triangle, located at West 36th Street and Dyer Avenue. We hope to encourage public use, and a more seamless and pleasant transition into the far Westside.

In addition, HYHK provides holiday lighting from November to January, lighting up the streets at night for community members and holiday shoppers alike.

Sanitation

In partnership with Streetplus, we maintain a supplemental sanitation service zone covering Ninth Avenue from West 35th to West 42nd Streets, Tenth Avenue from West 34th to West 42nd Streets, West 42nd Street; West 37th Street, the Canoe (West 36th Street and 9th Avenue) and The Triangle (Dyer Avenue at West 36th Street) seven days a week.

Each month, HYHK’s contractor does an overnight sweep of the district, removing construction debris, illegal dumping, derelict bikes, derelict news racks, and other large items that are illegally left on our streets and sidewalks.
