The Hudson Yards Hell's Kitchen Alliance (HYHK) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of the diverse population who lives, works and visits within the district. Our work involves supplemental sanitation services, streetscape improvements, neighborhood horticulture and beautification projects, and assistance to district small businesses.
Our Work
In addition, HYHK maintains and operates Bella Abzug Park and organizes cultural and wellness programming and events within the park and the district.
District Improvements
The district has a very diverse landscape. Through our projects, we seek to achieve a level of balance and compatibility between the existing neighborhood and the area’s new development. HYHK is dedicated to the beautification and maintenance of the district, and we are adapting constantly to ensure the neighborhood’s changing needs are met.
Streetscape and Beautification
Each year, the Canoe, a public plaza maintained by HYHK, becomes a better public space for users of 9th Avenue. Currently, there are 18 tables, 42 chairs, and nine umbrellas available for public use.
In the fall of 2018, a large planting bed was installed in the northern section of the Canoe, doubling the amount of green space. 12 new trees were planted, as well as understory plantings. Space was set aside for a permanent public art piece, the Ascension sculpture by local artist, Jordan Baker-Caldwell. The Canoe is open to the public 8:00 am - 7:00 pm, seven days a week.
We also maintain the Triangle, located at West 36th Street and Dyer Avenue. We hope to encourage public use, and a more seamless and pleasant transition into the far Westside.
HYHK provides for the planting, watering, pruning, mulching in Bella Abzug Park, and throughout the district, totaling 124 planters. They are adorned with Smokebush, Knockout Rose, Goldeflame Spirea, Yucca, and Lantana to name a few. 17 planters are in the two plazas, 29 in the Canoe, 32 in the Triangle and 46 within various bump-outs on 37th and 39th Streets. HYHK also beautifies and maintains 19 tree pits.
Sanitation
In partnership with Streetplus, we maintain a supplemental sanitation service zone covering Ninth Avenue from West 35th to West 42nd Streets, Tenth Avenue from West 34th to West 42nd Streets, West 42nd Street; West 37th Street, the Canoe (West 36th Street and 9th Avenue) and The Triangle (Dyer Avenue at West 36th Street) seven days a week.
Every month, HYHK’s contractor does an overnight sweep of the district, removing construction debris, illegal dumping, derelict bikes, derelict news racks, and other large items that are illegally left on our streets and sidewalks.
Bella Abzug Park
Bella Abzug Park is a fundamental element of the new Hudson Yards district. As the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation official maintenance and operations partner for Bella Abzug Park, HYHK maintains and programs the Park year-round providing much needed open space for area residents, workers and visitors, the Park is the green center at the heart of this burgeoning vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood.
The park extends from 33rd Street to 36th Street in between 10th and 11th Avenues, alongside newly created streets known as Hudson Boulevard East. The extension of the No. 7 subway line reaches new terminal stations in Bella Abzug Park at Hudson Boulevard East and West 34th and 35th Street.
HYHK hosts a variety of programming including a seasonal wellness series, movie nights, salsa and bachata dance parties, and pop-up food and cultural activations. The Park has also been establishing itself as a center for public art and sculpture. On view now through fall 2024, Sui Park’s City Ecology installation is made up of 32 site-specific sculptures nestled in the parks landscape. Our work ensures that Bella Abzug Park becomes a site of cultural engagement and opportunity for the community, and greater New York.
Public Events and Programming
HYHK's annual wellness series runs from spring through early fall. Please come back and visit your favorite instructors again in May.

HYHK Arts
HYHK’s focus on cultural programming continues to thrive in an effort to encourage and enhance the neighborhood’s creativity and diversity. We’ve partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to commission murals on the sides of the bridge walls owned by PANYNJ throughout the district. Currently, the murals feature work by artists Ashley-Simone McKenzie, Xavier Dolida, Dennis Redmoon Darkeem, and Patti Samper.
We look forward to commissioning more temporary art installations in the park and district, and continuing to develop a sense of community in the neighborhood through cultural experiences.
