The HYHK storefront improvement grant program provides matching grants to small business owners interested in improving their storefronts with a new compliant sign, awning, or facade improvement. To be eligible you must be a storefront business owner located within the boundaries of the HYHK district that has been in operation for at least one year.

The storefront improvement grant program provides matching grants of up to $4,000* per business. The application period is now open until April 15th, 2026. Applications will be reviewed by the HYHK team and grant finalists will be notified via email of their status by May 1st, 2026.

Before applying please confirm your eligibility, read through the grant requirements, and review the resources below. Only complete applications will be considered. Please be advised that this is a reimbursement based grant. Grantees must secure a sign or awning permit from the NYC Department of Buildings and must work with a licensed sign or awning installer for work to be approved and for the grant to be disbursed.

*Oversized storefronts or corner businesses may be eligible for more funding.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Confirm your business is located within HYHK’s boundaries.

  2. Review the NYC Small Business Services storefront guide to explore design guidelines and compliant improvements.

  3. Procure a project estimate for proposed work from a licensed NYC awning and sign installer. A list of contractors is provided here.

  4. Obtain a rendering or drawing of the proposed work.

  5. If you are a tenant, receive written approval of the work from your landlord.

  6. Complete the online grant application and attach all required documents.

  7. Applications will be reviewed by HYHK. Finalists will be notified by email.

  8. Once your project is approved and signed off by HYHK, secure any required licenses or permits.

  9. HYHK will reimburse funds to approved businesses upon successful completion of the project.
